The American Civil War lasted 4 years. It began on April 12, 1861, with the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter in South Carolina, and officially ended on April 9, 1865, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.
Although fighting largely ceased after Lee's surrender, some Confederate forces continued to surrender in the weeks following, and the final Confederate military force surrendered on June 23, 1865.
Notable Wars and Conflicts on American Soil Post-Civil War:
Indian Wars (1865–1898):
A series of conflicts between the U.S. government and various Native American tribes in the West. Notable examples include the Battle of Little Bighorn (1876) and the Wounded Knee Massacre (1890).
Spanish-American War (1898):
While most of the fighting occurred outside the continental U.S., such as in Cuba and the Philippines, there were minor naval actions near U.S. shores.
World War II (1941–1945):
The Aleutian Islands Campaign (1942–1943) involved Japanese forces occupying parts of Alaska's Aleutian Islands. This is one of the rare examples of foreign troops occupying U.S. territory during modern times.
Pearl Harbor Attack (1941):
Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii during World War II was a significant event on U.S. territory.
9/11 Terrorist Attacks (2001):
Though not a conventional war, the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon led to the War on Terror and significantly impacted U.S. soil.
These events demonstrate that while large-scale wars between organized armies on American soil have been rare since the Civil War, smaller-scale conflicts and acts of aggression have occurred.

President Biden has authorized the first use of U.S.-supplied long-range missiles by Ukraine for strikes inside Russia, U.S. officials said.
The weapons are likely to be initially employed against Russian and North Korean troops in defense of Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region of western Russia, the officials said.
Mr. Biden’s decision is a major change in U.S. policy. The choice has divided his advisers, and his shift comes two months before President-elect Donald J. Trump takes office, having vowed to limit further support for Ukraine.(EMPHASIS MINE)
Allowing the Ukrainians to use the long-range missiles, known as the Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS, came in response to Russia’s surprise decision to bring North Korean troops into the fight, officials said.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine did not confirm the permission to strike but suggested on Sunday that more important than lifting the restrictions would be the number of missiles used to strike the Russians.

President Vladimir V. Putin on Tuesday lowered Russia’s threshold for the use of nuclear weapons, a long-planned move whose timing appeared designed to show the Kremlin could respond aggressively to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory with American long-range missiles.
The decree signed by Mr. Putin implemented a revised version of Russia’s nuclear doctrine that Mr. Putin described in televised remarks in September. But the timing was clearly meant to send a message, coming just two days after the news that President Biden had authorized the use of U.S.-supplied long-range missiles by Ukraine for strikes inside Russia.
Asked whether Russia could respond with nuclear weapons to such strikes, Dmitri S. Peskov, Mr. Putin’s spokesman, repeated the new doctrine’s language that Russia “reserves the right” to use such weapons to respond to a conventional-weapons attack that creates a “critical threat” to its “sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Russia’s Ministry of Defense later announced that Kyiv had used the long-range ballistic missiles known as the Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, in a pre-dawn attack on an ammunition depot in southwestern Russia. A senior American and a senior Ukrainian official, both of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing operations, confirmed that ATACMS were used.
